* COMPETITION ENTRY FOR ODITI / Masego @ Glastonbury Festival 2024

graphic design / apparel / illustration / typography / layout

[ 2024 ]

  • As per Oditi's page:

"Masego is inviting you to design a limited edition t-shirt to celebrate his upcoming debut Glastonbury Festival performance!

The winner will have their creation worn on the big stage!

Your design should be a digital artwork. Please look at the provided mood board in the 'helpful resources' section to get an idea of the creative direction Masego wishes to pursue with this collection."

    Include on front:

    • MASEGO

    • Glastonbury

    • 2024

    Include on back:

    • "On Saturday, June 29th, 2024 Masego performed at the iconic Glastonbury Festival. To celebrate, he had this t-shirt designed by his really talented fan, _________."

  • Watch Masego's braids dance around while he performs, and you’ll understand why they’re an accentuated element of this design.

Focus is drawn to his braids and saxophone through use of warped perspective and curves, which contrast an otherwise geometric design; inspired by the moodboard. Meanwhile, typefaces & handwriting were tailored to harmonise with the tapering shapes of the illustration.

A nod to Masego’s rose-giving (& Glastonbury’s UK location) is featured throughout the design, whilst the colour palette takes inspiration from bold, vintage Brazilian and jazz visuals.

  • Digital illustration made up the majority of the design, while the typeface 'Le Mumure' was chosen and modified, due to its' classic yet quirky character - akin to Masego's public character.

The designs were collated in Adobe Photoshop.

  • This design ranked among the highest voted, as decided by fellow designers - however, it did not win :(

But, the opportunity to participate still feels surreal, so I’m always grateful to Oditi, and Masego & team.

It was a great challenge in apparel design, and as discussed in my Masego album book design which was completed just prior to this competition, it was an awesome exercise in synesthesia :)

Also, congratulations to the winner (see here!), and thanks to all those who voted!

“Your use of texture and depth is simply brilliant. It gives the artwork so much dimension!”
