  • As a passion project, the self-set brief was simple:

    • highlight synesthesia

    • use only black and a pop of colour on each spread.

    • 'Alternate Gothic' for all titles, 'Le Murmure' for pull quotes.

  • Drawing from the sounds of each track on the 2023 self-titled album by the RnB / Trap Jazz legend, Masego, each page of this mini magazine (zine) / lyric book, aims to embody the harmonies & grooves through typography & colour.

After being introduced to the word synesthesia in a graphic design uni course, my heightened feelings about the experience of music finally had a name. I chose to explore this by challenging myself to create an editorial spread for each song on an album.

Masego (2023) was chosen due to the dynamic, intricate, innovative & fun arrangements that characterise Masego's music.

    • Involved listening to each song multiple times, and allowing my mind's eye to translate various sounds into images, which were used to inform the editorial design.

    • A visual language of volume was created (see full breakdown at the bottom of the page), and colours were chosen by what I first imagined (a.k.a. synesthesia).

    • improved creativity & confidence in editorial design spreads.

    • heightened practice of synesthesia

I didn't know the true meaning of high-vibrational people, until I witnessed Masego in concert.

This is the product of that inspiration.

All original images belong to their owners - though I wasn’t able to find their names. Images were sourced from Pinterest — excluding the hat, from a screenshot of Masego on Tank’s RnB Money podcast. Most final images are covered under ‘transformative’ fair use; however, this project is not for commercial purposes, it’s just a creative exercise so please don’t sue me, thank you :)
